Julia Love Stegall

December 28, 1929 — June 13, 2011

Mrs. Julia Love Stegall, 81, of Matthews, and formerly of Oak Island, passed away peaceably on Monday, June 13, 2011. Mrs. Stegall, born on December 28, 1929 in Chester, SC, was the daughter of the late Frank T. Love, Sr. and Mary Williams Love. In all of her life endeavors she was most dedicated to excellence. She graduated as salutatorian of her 1947 senior class at Harding High School. Her career spanned 38 years in the business world as an executive assistant for the Hugh F. Dick Insurance Co., Southern Real Estate, and Cameron M. Harris Insurance Co. at South Park. Her marriage to William H. Stegall, "Bill", was a highlight of her personal life. Both enjoyed friends, dancing the "jitterbug", and trips to Oak Island. At early retirement in 1986, their move to a permanent residence at the coast brought them eight wonderful years together before Bill's death in August 1994. As an active member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Stegall most delighted in singing in the church choir. In her retirement she served as an officer in the Oak Island Senior Citizens and for her years of service she was honored by the group. Above all, her role as grandmother was at the top of her accolades. Fondly called, "Grampy", by her twin grandchildren, Mary and John, brought her great joy. She was considered their "groovy grandma" because of her fun loving spirit. In later years, the arrival of three great- grandchildren gave her much to talk about with others. A strong woman of character who always could handle the challenges that life gave her; she will always be remembered as a devoted wife, a wonderful mother, and a caring grandmother. She is survived by her son, Robert Arthur, "Art", Stegall and wife Barbara of Matthews, NC; granddaughter Mary S. Harrell and husband, Michael of Wilson, NC ; and grandson John Stegall and wife Lisa of Monroe, NC. Others include her great grandchildren, Zachary John and Cason Elizabeth Stegall and Nathan Michael Harrell and a sister, Mrs. Irma L. Funderburk of Matthews. In remembrance of Mrs. Stegall, memorials may be made in her name to Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care and/or Oak Island Presbyterian Church. Specific contact information regarding these two outstanding organizations may be found in the left column designated "Place a Donation". *
