Joseph Eugene Thomas (Gene), 74, of Monroe, North Carolina, went to be with the Lord early Friday morning, July 20, 2012, while in the care of Carolinas Medical Center-Union in Monroe, North Carolina. Gene was born April 26, 1938, in Peachland, North Carolina, and was the son of the late Hallman Thomas and Cornelia Little Thomas. Gene is survived by his wife Carolyn Hand Thomas and stepdaughter Lorie Winchester, of Monroe, NC; his daughter Elizabeth Moore and son-in-law Don Moore and grandchildren Jamie Moore and Jonathon Moore of Stallings, NC; three brothers, Aaron Thomas of Indian Trail, NC; Conway (Marty) Thomas of Peachland, NC; and Larry (Kate) Thomas of Austin, TX; two sisters Martha (John) Russell of Rockwell, NC; and Sandra (Rob) Falkner of Lincolnton, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends Maria, Mandy, Christina and Makayla (Rosebud). In his life he was a member of several churches beginning with his home church of Deep Springs Baptist, Peachland, NC, King Memorial Baptist, Waxhaw, NC, Back to Bethel Baptist, Monroe, NC and Covenant Christian Fellowship, Monroe, NC. Gene proudly served in the United States Army from January 1962 to January 1964. During which time he was stationed at Fort Jackson, SC for basic training, then to Fort Benning, GA , Cape Canaveral, FL during The Cuban Crisis, and to The University of Alabama during the “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door”. While living in Waxhaw he served as a volunteer Fireman/EMT for the Waxhaw Fire Department. He retired from Mount Hope Machinery, Charlotte, NC in September 2001 after many years of dedicated service. After retiring he joined the Monroe Aquatics & Fitness Center, where he loved to “play around in the water” and workout in the fitness room and most importantly he enjoyed the companionship of his many friends. The family wishes to express a special Thank You to the staff of CMC-Union and the staff of The Jesse Helms Center of Monroe for their love, care and compassion during his illness. –
