Frederick Thomas Maul

December 7, 1948 — February 13, 2018

Frederick Thomas Maul passed away on February 13, 2018 of a worn out, much used heart. Fred was adopted in Queens, NY by the late Frederick and Veronica Maul in 1950. The trendy couple raised Fred and his surviving sister, Virginia Maul in College Point, NY and is where Fred was introduced to cooking by his late Nana, Anna Loris. He was survived by his loving and incredibly patient wife of 47 years, Rita. Rita and Fred had a Hollywood beginning; meeting at a dance held for the Navy boys in New London, CT. Fred was famous for being a submarine cook and burning his Commanding Officer with a cayenne spiked chili. Fred also saved the lives of his crew mates when their sub was rammed by a Russian submarine at the exact place his freezer was welded to the frame. An entrepreneur at heart, Fred and Rita owned and operated a couple of restaurants and a bowling alley. The two welcomed their miracle, Martin Frederick Maul in 1980. In 1986, Fred began a 20-year career as a USPS Letter Carrier. This new job was a perfect match; plenty of customers to chat with and dogs to feed treats. Fred passed his love of the Yankees and Whalers on to Martin and the 3 became avid fans. Fred planned great bus trips to Yankee Stadium where food and cool beverages for the boys in blue allowed the buses to have premo parking. Fred also enjoyed watching Martin play baseball and hockey from childhood through high school. Fred's pep talk during Martin's last high school game resulted in his last career goal and a W. Like many only children, Martin was spoiled rotten and didn't learn to share until he married his wife, Leah in 2007. The couple settled in Mint Hill, NC and started a baseball and hockey fanatic family of their own. Fred enjoyed watching Martin Jr. and Crosby learn to play hockey and baseball and did his own coaching from the stands. Genevieve had Fred wrapped around her finger and enjoyed playing and tickling G-pa and the gummy treats he sneaked her were her favorite. Fred and the kids enjoyed watching sports together, but their favorite was America's Funniest Home videos. Belly laughs from all could be heard from down the street. Please join us in celebrating Fred's life on Saturday, February 24 at 4:00 at Gaskin Funeral Services. The service will begin at 4:15 followed by a visitation with family and friends.
