Erwin Poe Smith

January 11, 1935 — January 5, 2012

Erwin P Smith passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2012 after a courageous battle with a blood disorder. He was born January 11, 1935 in Durham, NC, the son of Erwin and Inez Smith, both deceased. Erwin grew up in Asheville, was the president of student government at Lee Edwards High School, attended Western Carolina University and graduated from the University of Tennessee. Erwin began his career in Lenoir NC with Broyhill Industries, where he met and married Eleanor Powell Smith. In 1963 he joined North Carolina National Bank in Greensboro, which moved him to Charlotte in 1968. He worked with the bank for 38 years, as it transitioned to what is now Bank of America. Erwin was always proud of his tenure with the bank and its instrumental role in the growth and transformation of Charlotte. Post retirement, he increased his involvement in service and volunteer work through Queen City Optimist, Sharon United Methodist Church, and Pinewood Elementary School. Erwin positively touched the lives of everyone he came across, taught his family the importance of giving back, and the love of laughter. His greatest joys were his three grandchildren, his dog Smokey, and relaxing at his family's mountain home. He is survived by his wife Eleanor, his daughters Beth Smith Shuey and her husband Gary, Becky Greene and husband David, his grandchildren Carter, Abby, and Mitchell Greene, his sister Janis and husband Tom Anderson, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Sharon United Methodist Church or Queen City Optimist Youth Programs please refer to the column to the left and click "Place A Donation" for additional contribution information. - -
