Betty Jane Dowdy

July 21, 1934 — June 13, 2019

Mrs. Betty Jane Hyler Dowdy, 84 of Charlotte, NC was reunited with her sweetheart, sons, and countless loved ones when she entered Heaven's gates on Thursday, June 13, 2019.

Betty was born in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Harry Baker Hyler and Pearline Morris Hyler. She was the beloved bride of Donald Ray Dowdy, and had celebrated over 55 years of marriage together prior to his passing in 2006. Sister Dowdy was also preceded in death by two sons, Donald Ray, Jr. and Glenn David and her sister-in-law Joan McLawhorn Hyler.

A longtime minister of God's Word, Sister Dowdy served Him faithfully by leading Good Shepherd, Merritt's Chapel, and Red Springs P.H. Churches across North Carolina and Virginia in the International Pentecostal Holiness Conference. The families of those congregations always held a special place in her heart. Even after retirement, she continued to minister to those around her. In her spare time Betty loved to shop with her family and go out and eat. She was known for her shoes! Betty loved her friends at Charlotte Square and longed to return there. Her caretaker Shakira called her "mom" and was dear to her heart.

Betty surrounded herself with her friends and family. She loved to sing and harmonize and could often be found in her own private worship time praising God and calling out the names of each of her family members in prayer. It was not uncommon for one of her friends or family members to get a call or voicemail from Betty just to say hello and that she loved them. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and cherished her titles as Nana and Nee Nee.

Mrs. Dowdy is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Kenneth and Brenda Durbin and Edward and Debbie Curran, along with four grandsons: Stephen (Elizabeth) Hill, Eddie Curran, Michael (Meridith) Curran, and David (Lindsay) Curran; two granddaughters, Josie (Tim) Torgeson and Jackie (Brian) Purvis; and the blessing of six great-grandchildren: Alexzander Torgeson, Gabriella Torgeson, Hailey Hill, Alaina Curran, Lincoln Curran, and Isla Curran. She looked forward to becoming a great-grandmother again, anticipating the adoption of her next great-grandson this summer. Betty also leaves behind two brothers, Raymond (Helen) Hyler and Don (Maggie) Hyler; and two sisters, Juanita (Charles Hayslett) and Suzy Hyler Ware.

A service to celebrate Mrs. Dowdy's life will be held on Monday, June 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in Central Church of God in Charlotte. A time of visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. until time for the service. Betty is being laid to rest beside her loving husband, Donald, at Sharon Memorial Park at 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests you give to your local church in memory of Sister Betty to support the spread of the Gospel.
