Betty Calvert

April 14, 1934 — September 5, 2021

Betty Calvert, 87, joyfully entered into the presence of her heavenly Father on Sunday, September 5, 2021.  Betty was born in Memphis, TN on April 14, 1934 to Robert Earl Barrett and Mary Olivette Barrett.  She was the wife of Bill Calvert who preceded her in death in 2013 after 61 years of marriage. The family will gather at 10 am on Saturday, September 11, 2021 in the narthex of Central Church, 5301 Sardis Rd., Charlotte, NC to greet friends. A celebration of Betty’s life will follow in the sanctuary at 11 am.  Her immediate family includes her three daughters, Linda Hohing and her husband Keith; Susan Barbee and Karen Shue. Her grandchildren include Heather Pressley and her husband Mike; Lisa Hinson and her husband Zack; Brooke Barbee; Alan Barbee and his wife Sophia; Nolan Shue and his wife Kendall; and Taylor Shue and his wife Amy. Her family also includes seven great-grandchildren. Betty grew up in Charlotte and graduated from Central High School in 1952. She was a wonderful homemaker and volunteered for many organizations including the Salvation Army, Samaritan House, Friendship Trays, Charity League and the Humane Society. She was a member at Central Church where she volunteered in the nursery and attended Bible studies.  She also went on mission trips to Egypt and Bulgaria in her late 70s.  One of Betty’s favorite charities was The Salvation Army. Our mom was always doing for others (Matthew 25:40) so she volunteered and donated to this wonderful organization for many years. We are asking that instead of flowers or other acts of kindness, that you would honor her by either donating a bag of clothes that you no longer wear or helping us collect toiletries (soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, etc.) for the Salvation Army Center of Hope women’s homeless shelter. We will be collecting these items for the next month and will also have a basket for donations at her memorial service.
